Why move into transaction advisory services?

Professionals who move from audit into TS often see a meaningful salary increase. This is alongside further exposure to deal-focused work. Transaction services is also a common route into private equity and corporate development roles, as demonstrable commercial judgement and financial modelling skills are essential.

Senior Associate

Typical timeframe: 2-3 years in audit, often alongside ACA qualification

Often, the senior associate role will be what you’re transferring to, having made the jump from auditing or other service lines which often see you qualifying as a chartered accountant. You’ll usually spend two years in auditing before moving across, having shown high levels of performance and, typically, having qualified as an accountant.

As a Transaction Services Senior Associate, you’ll be asked to support deals already in progress through your knowledge of financial due diligence. Clients will want your support in analysing the viability of deals, by studying historical performance, identifying key risks, and preparing QoE insights. All of this is delivered under tight time constraints.

Progression is less about technical ability, as your competence with numbers will be assumed, and more about your soft skills. That means how well you communicate with clients, how well you answer questions, and how sound your judgement is in the room.

Once you have completed a number of deals, your expectations change from supporting analysis to taking ownership across multiple live deals.

With increased exposure comes broader experience, often across both buy-side and sell-side transactions. With that comes the ability to challenge assumptions and provide recommendations to your clients, as you continue to craft your understanding of commercial decision-making.

Promotion hinges on taking ownership – ownership of your work, of your stakeholders’ work, and of your role within the team. Technical ability is assumed, and no longer enough on its own: what separates you from your peers will be your confidence, communication, and perceived credibility in the eyes of your clients.

Manager

Typical timeframe: after 2-3 years in TS

As you become a manager, you move from contributing to deals to leading them. You’ll be the main point of contact for your senior clients, coordinating teams of younger associates, and managing delivery of reports.

As a manager, you’ll have taken clients from scoping through to delivery, and shown your commercial mindset. You’re expected to translate findings into actionable insights, and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines in high-pressure environments.

This is also the time where your sector specialisation begins to matter more. Developing a niche can make you stand out and be a useful go-to resource for the rest of your team.

Success at this level comes from leading effectively, and demonstrating the tangible improvements you have delivered to the business.

Associate Director

Typical timeframe: After 4-5 years in TS

As an associate director, the role develops from leading on deals to also leading people on transactions. Your years of providing commercial insights will help you shape the direction of deals, and take ownership of engagements and client relationships.

You’ll take a more active role in interpreting findings, moving your role from just reporting to storytelling. This means highlighting key risks and guiding decision-making across multiple clients.

You’ll be reviewing outputs, maintaining regular interaction with the senior stakeholders, and supporting business development – both by following leads for new clients and by finding new opportunities within your existing relationships.

Internally, you’re expected to develop the team – setting standards and building up the next generation of associates. Progression depends on demonstrating your ability to find, build, and win work.

Director

Typical timeframe: After 5-7+ years in TS

At director level, you’ll be thinking both in terms of delivering high-level engagements as well as driving revenue within your team.

You’ll lead client relationships, take responsibility for your part of revenue generation, and be expected to nurture and strengthen the relationships you’ve already built. You’ll lead pitches, you’ll identify new opportunities, and convert relationships into meaningful revenue streams.

In this role, you’ll ensure risks are managed, quality is guaranteed, and teams are guided through complex environments. You’ll be the leader who helped you when you were a younger associate, and you’ll be expected to mentor Managers and Associate Directors, showing the pipeline that others can follow.

Progression depends on your ability to build a presence in the marketplace, and your continual ability to generate revenue. That is what will take you to partner.

Partner

Typical timeframe: After 10+ years of transaction services

Expert guidance, rigorous due diligence work, and a career of experience in transactions is half the work in becoming a partner; the other half is building a network alongside a reputation for converting opportunities into engagements.

Ability is assumed; your value is in relationships. It’s in carving out influence and setting the strategic direction of the business. This is where reputation is paramount, both in and outside of the company, it’s that trust that converts into revenue.
