My insolvency career started near to four years ago when I joined a local accountancy practise in their insolvency department. Four years later and I am now working as a Recruitment Consultant for a London recruitment agency specialising in insolvency recruitment.

After completing my first three months at Gambit Search, and with it being a New Year, it seemed a good time to reflect on what I have learnt and what I’ll be taking into 2023.

Firstly, ‘cultural fit” really is an important factor that should be considered by both candidates and clients when considering a move/a new hire. I’ve learnt how important it is to get to know people on a level that is more than just a transactional process. Actually understanding needs and desires goes a very long way.

From a personal level, I couldn’t have been welcomed more at Gambit and working with people that genuinely want to help, and not only want you to succeed, but also believe that you can, is invaluable.

Secondly, being pushed out of your comfort zone is good! I felt massively out of my comfort zone when starting out a new career after four years of working hard to develop and succeed in the insolvency industry. However, it couldn’t have turned out better.  Avoid denying yourself future opportunities because things are comfortable and easy now.  New people, new motivations and new challenges.

Finally, communication is key. Whether this is from candidate to recruiter, recruiter to client or even employee to manager. Ask the hard questions. Talk about your concerns, speak up. A simple concern can be ironed out within minutes if it is spoken about. Don’t let things build and become big factors that result in negative outcomes.

I have of course learnt a lot more than I have written about today. However these are the points that I feel most worthwhile to think about going into this year.  I am extremely excited to see what this year brings and I am looking forward to speaking to many of you at some point.
